Through the enrichment services classes, students from the district in grades 3-5 including Big Creek, had the opportunity to meet author Shelley Pearsall on January 12th at Ford Middle School.   Shelley is a former Ford Middle School teacher who now writes full-time.  As part of a semester-long unit, students read her book, Trouble Don’t Last, which won a Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction.  It is a riveting story about two runaway slaves on a journey through Ohio for freedom on the Underground Railroad.
After sharing her life experiences and research as an author, students participated in a writing workshop with Shelley in which they developed their own character.   At the end of the presentation, twenty-five students were chosen to have lunch with Mrs. Pearsall to ask her questions about writing and life as an author.  It was an authentic experience for students to see how imagination, creativity, and perseverance can lead to a writing career some day.
